The French Press is a full immersion brewing device with a metal mesh filter. It guarantees something in particular, a viscous extraction with a lot of body and an increase in texture because most of the oils remain in the final extraction but also fewer coffee particles. The ability to control all the variables of a French Press, such as water temperature, grind size, and extraction time, allows for the improvement of brewing methods according to personal preferences. Most importantly, if prepared correctly, you can enjoy the nuances of aroma and flavors in each coffee you brew.

What do I need for the preparation?

  • Macizo Specialty Coffee in preferably whole bean form.
  • Gooseneck kettle (flow restrictor is optional but allows for better pour control.
  • Coffee scale or measuring spoon (7g).
  • Burr grinder preferably.
  • Small French press method.
  • Coffee cup.
  • 21 grams or 3 tablespoons of Macizo coffee.
  • 330-350 ml of water below boiling point, if you don’t have a thermometer, wait for 45 to 60 seconds after reaching boiling point (approximately 90-95 degrees Celsius).

Now, to the action!

  1. Boil good quality water until it reaches a temperature between 90ºC to 95ºC (if you don’t have a thermometer, wait for about 45 to 60 seconds after boiling starts).
  2. Preheat: Pour hot water into the French press, rinse the filter thoroughly to heat the filter and the container, then discard the water.
  3. Grind the Macizo specialty coffee beans to a coarse grind (similar to coarse sand). Note: For this preparation, we recommend a coarse grind. French press coffee makers allow fine coffee particles to pass through, so the final brew may have a sandy texture.
  4. Measure out 21 grams of coffee; you can weigh it with a scale or use 3 tablespoons.
  5. This preparation is for a 3-cup French press (approximately 330-350 ml). Start your timer and pour enough water to saturate the coffee grounds.
  6. At 45 seconds, add the remaining water up to the top, place the plunger on the jar but do not push it down. Let it steep for 4 minutes, and then slowly and gently push the plunger down to the bottom.
  7. Pour the coffee into your cup carefully, without stirring the coffee grounds at the bottom. We recommend preheating your cup with a little hot water before serving to prevent thermal shock from hot coffee and a cold cup. Now, enjoy your delicious coffee!
